Scope

Recent years brought a rapid development of all kinds of robots. The most rapidly developing types are exploration and rescue robots. The diversity of tasks and environments that they operate in imposes acute requirements on their perception systems. Moreover, different environments necessitate diverse propulsion mechanisms. This causes their control systems to be highly complex. In order to control their diverse and complex embodiment and operate safely in non-deterministic environments they need to be endowed with various forms of intelligence. For example, they must be able to actively control their perception and amalgamate information from diverse senses to rationally control the effectors so that in consequence the allotted task will be executed flawlessly. Both exploration and rescue operations require of the robot: manipulation and translocation skills, which in turn necessitate adequate action and trajectory planning, navigation, diverse forms of perception, system integration and design of architectures of robot control systems. This type of robot will have to interact with rescue teams, so communication with humans is also the subject of interest. The topic of the session encompasses theoretical, application and implementation aspects of exploration and rescue robots.

The aim of the special session on Exploration and Rescue Robots is to gather researchers and practitioners to report on their recent achievements in the development of this type of robots, dealing with real-world problems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following aspects of exploration and rescue robots:

  • Mechanical design
  • Perception
  • Navigation
  • Environment Modelling and Representation
  • Action Planning
  • Control Architectures
  • Task specification
  • Human-Robot Interaction

Papers should be submitted by the 16th of February 2015 (midnight Pacific Time) through the conference paper submission system, papercept.net. This session has the following code: q6q9a. In order to submit your paper to the special session on Exploration and Rescue Robots please select Invited Session Paper option in the submission system and then use the above code.
